Da Filippo : San Sebastián, Spain

Sorry, everyone, but you can no longer complain that there is not a decent Italian restaurant in San Sebastián.

I mean, look at these gorgeous bites. The first picture is a delicious mortadella and pistachio cone. Above you have some burrata and lobster tartlettes and a cracker with parsley mayo, anchovy and pickled onion. And these are just the amuse bouche.

Da Filippo in San Sebastián is exquisite…I feel comfortable saying it is the best spot for pasta in the city. Take this fusilli with oxtail, porcini, and egg yolk, for example.

Or this stuffed pasta with spinach and ricotta, served with a rich broth, poured over tableside.

I absolutely loved the meal there, from this incredible focaccia to the imaginative use of ingredients typically poorly understood here in Spain like mortadella and burrata.

This is a summer season dish, a deliciously fresh shrimp tartar with beets and mustard seed.

The real star here are the pasta dishes, each of which will set you back between €20 and €30 (okay, you knew there had to be a catch). This lobster risotto with pumpkin, nduja and pickled lemon was outstanding.

Worth going just for the chance to have a decent tiramisu around these parts. Tiramisu is one of those things that is widespread in Spain but something has been lost in translation, and it’s never quite right. Here it is, as was the passion fruit panna cotta.
