Michelin Star Restaurants in Spain — Now in 2022

Michelin stars Spain

While I am a little late posting this, I think it’s still a worthwhile post and some of you may have even missed the news in the hullabaloo leading up to Christmas.

The Michelin Guide released its 2022 ratings, and there were several new stars in Spain. Let’s talk about which restaurants got a new star, how many Michelin stars there are in Spain now, and all other things Michelin!

How many Michelin stars are there in Spain?

Well, after the new 2022 Michelin ratings were released, there are now 228 restaurants with Michelin stars in Spain, making for a total of 261 stars. The Michelin guide also included Portugal, where there are seven two-starred and 26 one-starred restaurants, and Andorra, which has one Michelin-starred restaurant.

How many new Michelin stars were added in Spain in 2022?

The Michelin Guide has announced its star selection for Spain adding 27 new one-star restaurants and four new two-stars, but there were no new additions to the Guide’s top tier.

Were there any new three-star restaurants?

No! Aka, restaurants like Mugaritz still sit (as they have during their meteoric rise through the ranks of World’s 50 Best) with just two stars. Ah, the mystery! Ah, the politics! The 11 three-star restaurants hold strong for the 2022 edition:

Arzak
Akelarre
Martín Berasategui
Lasarte Barcelona
Celler de Can Roca
Quique Dacosta
Azurmendi
Aponiente
ABaC
DiverXo
Cenador de Amós

What was the big surprise this year?

The biggest surprise was probably the Smoked Room, Dani Garcia’s newest restaurant that opened in June 2021. It had, of course, no stars and shot straight up to two.

Did any restaurants lose stars?

Yes, especially this year with COVID. A total of 24 restaurants in the Spain and Portugal guide lost their stars, although 16 of these were due to closures or a move. Eight lost their stars for other reasons:

Monastrell
Orobianco
Manuel Alonso Restaurante
Es Racó d’Es Teix
Casamar
El Club Allard
Sents
Alejandro

What are spain’s new two-star spots?

The new two-star spots in Spain are:

Voro (Mallorca)
Iván Cerdeño (Toledo)
Smoked Room (Madrid)
Amelia (Donostia-San Sebastián)

What are the new one-star michelin restaurants in Spain?

Cañabota (Seville)
Nintai (Marbella)
Ayalga (Ribadesella)
La Gaia (Ibiza)
Zaranda (Palma de Mallorca)
El Rincón de Juan Carlos (Los Gigantes, Tenerife)
Poemas by Hermanos Padrón (Gran Canaria)
Nub (Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
El Serbal (Santander) * Due to change of location
Casona del Judío (Santander)
Coto de Quevedo (Juan Abad Tower)
Alejandro Serrano (Miranda de Ebro)
Lera (Castroverde de Campos)
Ment by Óscar Calleja (Salamanca)
Atempo (Sant Julià de Ramis, Girona)
Arrels (Sagunt)
Atalaya (Alcossebre)
Fierro (Valencia)
Kaido Sushi Bar (Valencia)
Canvas (Valencia)}
Peix & Brases (Dénia)
Versatil (Bramble of Granadilla)
Auga e Sal (Santiago de Compostela)
Deessa (Madrid)
Quimbayaa (Madrid)
Garena (Dima)
Nublo (Haro)

That last one is the one I am most excited about…a restaurant in the Rioja opened by former R&D of Mugaritz, Nublo is honest and authentic while managing to be surprising and delicious at the same time. That is going to be my first Michelin reservation this year, for sure.
